Product Description
The number one objective when caring for down wear is maintaining or restoring loft. This is done by keeping the feathers intact and separate. Breakage and matting or clumping cause feathers to compress so they can no longer trap heat and keep you warm. Down items should never be washed in a top loading machine – the agitators in top loaders are simply too hard on feathers. If you do not have a front-loader at home, visit a laundromat and use theirs. Also, be aware of the capacity of your machine – home front-loading machines are fine for jackets or vests, but sleeping bags, comforters and other large items should always be washed in a commercial front-loader (like the one at your local laundromat).

Down
Step 1: Place your down in a front loader washing machine, add Nikwax Down Wash to the detergent dispenser and run a normal cycle.
Step 2: Without removing your down gear from the machine, add Nikwax Down Proof to the detergent dispenser and run another normal cycle. Down Proof adds a micro-fine DWR to the exterior of the jacket AND the feathers themselves, making them virtually un-mattable!
Step 3: Read your care labels! Nikwax does not require heat to work, but the tumbling action of your dryer will assist in re-lofting your down gear. If the care label allows, tumble try on a slow spin, low heat setting. Make sure down is completely dry before removing from the dryer – it may take several cycles so use 1 more than you think you need. If you have an older down item that wasn’t properly cared for in the past (i.e. has some severe matting), toss a couple of (clean) tennis balls in during the drying cycles to help demolish those clumps.
Synthetic Fill (Primaloft) and Fleece
These fabrics are unique due to their ability to trap lots of heat within the thickness of the fabric. This thickness is also referred to as pile. Think of these fabrics as being made of tiny plastic threads and treat them accordingly. Meaning, use caution with dryers and irons, they can and will melt fleece or synthetic fill if turned up too high. Regardless of whether you’re working with a primaloft jacket, a synthetic fill sleeping bag or a fleece sleep sack, here is your cleaning guide for any high pile fabrics:
Step 1: Place your gear in the washing machine and add Nikwax Tech Wash to the detergent dispenser. Again, when laundering large items (like sleeping bags), use a commercial size machine. Run a normal cycle.
Step 2: Without removing your gear from the machine, add Nikwax Polar Proof to the detergent dispenser and run a second normal cycle.
Step 3: Read your garment care label. If the label allows, tumble dry. Otherwise hang to dry.
