Chaps & Gaiters
Chaps come in a huge array of shapes and sizes including half chaps, waterproof and leather chaps. Tally Ho Farm stocks the best brands including Tredstep, Shires and Ariat. We also understand that the world of chaps and gaiters might be daunting to the new rider and that’s why we’re here to help.
Why wear chaps?
They're there for your comfort and protection and they stop stirrup leather from pinching your legs.
What kind of chaps should I wear?
Chaps come in two main types - full and half chaps. Half chaps are the most commonly worn and cover from below the knee to the ankle, while full chaps cover the whole leg. The latter tend to stop at the top of the leg at the back to put the rider in good touch with the saddle. With both types, it’s very important that they are well fitted as otherwise it can cause discomfort. They should also be made of a suitable comfortable and durable material. Leather, suede, faux suede and neoprene are all common. Your choice will probably be made with the time of year and weather in mind.
What’s the difference between chaps and gaiters?
Gaiters are a slightly smarter version of half chaps, made from leather with a neater zip that runs down the back of the leg. Gaiters are mainly used in competitions but can also be used for everyday riding, although they do cost more. Tally Ho Farm sells chaps online for both adults and children.
