What are the key things to look for in a fly mask?
A fly mask must fit well, otherwise insects will be able to get inside. However, it should not rub too closely against the jaw, as this could result in sores. There must also be a raised area between the mask and the eyes and eyelashes, otherwise friction can cause corneal ulcers. Look for a mask with non-abrasive fabric and soft lining which will be gentle against your horse’s face.
Can you leave fly masks on overnight?
It’s best not to leave a fly mask on a horse or pony overnight. Flies won’t bother your animal at night, so they are safer not having a mask on. At night time your horse is best served by having maximum use of their peripheral vision.
